Governing Boards
IMA seeks volunteers to deliver our mission and long-term vision. We accept self-nominations for our Governing Board positions year-round. Appointments are made each January for the Global Board of Directors, and each spring for the ICMA® (Institute of Certified Management Accountants) Board of Regents and Chapter and Council Boards. Please review the details below to understand the requirements and responsibilities before applying for a Governing Board position. Service terms run July 1 through June 30 for a one- to three-year commitment.
Global Board Director
The responsibility for IMA’s governance rests with the Global Board of Directors under a set of bylaws and policies. Members of IMA’s Global Board of Directors have oversight of our strategic direction and monitor our association’s financial health and committee activities. These leaders serve as organization ambassadors and have an active role in advocating for our members and advancing the management accounting profession.
All global directors also serve on one of five Global Board committees as part of their Board service. Click on each committee to learn more.

Chair-Elect, Chair, and Chair-Emeritus
Each January, IMA’s Nominating Committee reviews applications for our most senior volunteer position. This is a position for one senior volunteer who serves for three consecutive years.
To be considered for the Chair-Elect position, candidates must have served at least one term on IMA’s Global Board of Directors and be able to travel in the U.S. and globally to represent the organization. For this position, all travel expenses are reimbursed by IMA. The time commitment for this position is between 250 and 300 hours per year.

ICMA Board of Regents
The ICMA Board of Regents oversees the CMA exam program, including the overall certification strategy, the program’s policies and procedures, content specifications, development of exam material, and overall program administration. The time commitment for this position is approximately up to 40 hours per year.

ICMA Exam Review Committee
The ICMA Exam Review Committee helps the ICMA Board of Regents ensure the excellence and integrity of the CMA and CSCA exams. Committee members, along with members of the Board of Regents, participate in the review of proposed exam questions.

IMA Research Foundation
The IMA Research Foundation provides funding, development, and dissemination of practical, relevant, and timely research in the area of management accounting. Grant proposals are reviewed and evaluated based on their potential to contribute to IMA’s body of knowledge and define the current and future competencies needed in the profession.

Chapter and Council Boards
Chapter and Council boards are responsible for the management and successful operation of local communities. Responsibilities include planning, coordinating, communicating, and conducting chapter activities to provide high-level service to local members.
The composition of chapter and council boards should include a minimum, but not limited to, the following positions: a president, secretary, treasurer, vice president of engagement, webmaster, and small task forces. All board members must be IMA members in good standing.
Obligations include duty of care, loyalty, and obedience to be successful and in compliance with IMA’s policies.
