With more than a century of service, our volunteer leaders serve as inspiration for our members to become champions in the profession.
We are pleased to announce that our winners have been selected for the 2023-2024 year, and their names are located at the bottom of this page. Nominations for 2024-2025 are now open.
The IMA Champion Award recognizes an IMA member who has demonstrated exceptional volunteerism and leadership skills that are beyond the call of duty in service to IMA consistent with IMA’s Mission and Global Core Values. Regardless of the length of service to IMA and/or IMA leadership positions held, this individual consistently will have demonstrated unselfish commitment and exceptional performance in support of our organization. This is someone who truly goes beyond what might be expected, serving as an example of volunteerism for others to follow.
Characteristics of an IMA Champion Award Nominee
Through nomination by others, an IMA Champion is an IMA member who demonstrates the following characteristics:
- Embraces IMA’s Mission and Global Core Values.
- Exhibits service leadership by developing and inspiring others.
- Promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion by encouraging and respecting alternative points of view.
- Demonstrates support for IMA, its members, and the management accounting profession.
- Effectively volunteers and is highly engaged in IMA, with a strong record of positive outcomes.
- Is a role model for IMA volunteers (at any level) and is highly regarded in the IMA community.
- Preferred: Holds the CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) certification.
The IMA Exemplary Global Board Member Award recognizes a member of the IMA Global Board who, consistent with IMA’s Mission and Global Core Values, exemplifies through preparation, participation, and service what a Board member should be and do. This individual, regardless of length of service to IMA, serves as an example for all Board members and sets a standard for superior performance.
Characteristics for the IMA Exemplary Global Board Member Award
The person you nominate:
- Must serve on the IMA Global Board of Directors and is not inclusive of local boards. If you would like to recognize a local board member for their volunteer contributions, please consider nominating them for one of the other awards.
- Embraces IMA’s Mission and Global Core Values.
- Exhibits service leadership by developing and inspiring others.
- Promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion by encouraging and respecting alternative points of view.
- Exhibits a remarkable level of engagement and commitment to effectively advance IMA’s mission.
- Serves as a role model by demonstrating excellent board etiquette and fulfilling the primary responsibilities of a board member: the duty of care, loyalty, foresight, and obedience.
- Provides leadership and strategic direction by collaborating with fellow board members and guiding the group to successful outcomes while exhibiting empathy and self-awareness.
- Preferred: Holds the CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) certification.
Young professionals who display outstanding and creative approaches to problem solving within the accounting and finance profession will be honored with the Exemplary Young Professional Award.
Characteristics for the Exemplary Young Professional Award
The person you nominate:
- Must be under the age of 40 as of July 1, 2023.
- Must be employed in the accounting or finance field at the time of nomination.
- Must embrace IMA’s Mission and Global Core Values.
- Must exhibit service leadership by developing and inspiring others.
- Must promote diversity, equity, and inclusion by encouraging and respecting alternative points of view.
- Must demonstrate impactful professional accomplishments, career growth, and passion for excellent service.
- Must be committed to advancing the profession by volunteering for IMA (preferred) or other professional organization(s), writing articles, and/or speaking at industry events.
- Must serve as an emerging leader and role model for other young professionals.
- Preferred: Holds the CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) certification.
The IMA Major J. Lee Nicholson Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes an IMA member (or non-member) who, consistent with IMA’s Mission and Global Core Values, has demonstrated sustainable, extraordinary leadership and dedication over a lifetime of service. Nominees for this award have made a lasting impression on IMA, other organizations, and the global profession overall.
Characteristics for the IMA Major J. Lee Nicholson Lifetime Achievement Award
The person you nominate:
- Embraces IMA’s Mission and Global Core Values.
- Exhibits service leadership by developing and inspiring others.
- Promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion by encouraging and respecting alternative points of view.
- Has established a lifetime legacy with IMA by advancing the management accounting profession, inspiring others, and building the IMA leadership pipeline.
- Is a highly regarded and respected leader who has contributed at least 20 years of service to the accounting and finance profession.
- Preferred: Holds the CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) certification.
- To receive this award, an individual must receive at least two nominations.
- Award may be given posthumously or to a past IMA member.
Distinguished award for educators in the management accounting and finance profession. Up to two educators could be selected for this prestigious award in an award period.
The IMA R. Lee Brummet Exemplary Educator Award is a revised award as of 2022. Prior recipients (2021 and earlier) of the IMA Faculty Leadership Award or the R. Lee Brummet Award are eligible for this new award.
The IMA R. Lee Brummet Exemplary Educator Award recognizes an IMA volunteer academic member who has distinguished themselves in the management accounting and finance profession. The award recognizes a faculty member who has demonstrated leadership and promotes the value of management accounting and the financial management career path to students through research, teaching, or faculty leadership and service. Nominations are open to any IMA volunteer academic members who teach in colleges or universities, including two-year community colleges (e.g., tenure track, nontenure track, adjunct faculty, faculty leaders in administration positions).
Attributes of an IMA R. Lee Brummet Exemplary Educator Award Nominee
The person you nominate should:
- Embrace IMA’s Mission and Global Core Values
- Be a role model for educators and highly regarded in the IMA community
- Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion by encouraging and respecting alternative points of view
- Preferred: Holds the CMA® (Certified Management Accountant) certification
Please provide examples of when the candidate you nominate has demonstrated:
- Faculty Leadership and Service to the Management Accounting Profession: Candidate has demonstrated significant faculty leadership to IMA and the management accounting profession. Examples of engagement may contain, but are not limited to, support of student chapters, CMA Scholarship program, Campus Advocate program, dedicated volunteer service on IMA committees and task forces, and participation in the IMA Student Case Competition. And/or:
- Distinguished Teaching Career in Management Accounting: Candidate has a distinguished record for teaching management accounting to students and academics. Supporting documentation for the nomination may contain years of teaching; variety of classes taught; teaching awards; or at least two letters of support from previous students, colleagues, peers, or supervisors. And/or:
- Record of Scholarship in Management Accounting: Candidate has a distinguished career in research in the management accounting field. Supporting documentation may contain academic articles (pertaining to the discipline); record of published scholarship (throughout career); number and quality of refereed articles (not presentations or proceedings); and grants (pertaining to the discipline) received.
Although the nomination materials could include a curriculum vitae, submission of only a curriculum vitae as supporting documentation for nomination for any of the above criteria is not acceptable.
