Discussions on SIG communities are visible to anyone. However, in order to start a discussion or post a comment on a SIG forum, you must be an IMA member or register for an IMA account.

SIGs are IMA member-led groups that are monitored by IMA staff. There are three volunteer leadership roles within each SIG:

  • SIG Leader: Serves as the key leader of the SIG, responsible for creating and nurturing a support and inclusive environment within the group. SIG Leaders are also responsible for managing group volunteer resources and promoting the group to attract new members into the community of like-minded individuals.
  • SIG Champion: Proactively advocates for and promotes the benefits of the SIG within their region or industry to ensure global engagement.
  • SIG Moderator: Facilitates engaging discussions, curates quality content, and fosters an inclusive environment by actively moderating the SIG community.

Guidelines for each SIG can be found here.

To establish a new SIG, a group of IMA members must submit a proposal to IMA to be reviewed by the IMA Community Relations & Governance Team. The proposal should include:

  • Subject area and proposed name for the SIG
  • Mission statement that articulates how the group furthers and promotes IMA’s mission
  • Description of the group served
  • If a similar SIG already exists, then a statement about how the new SIG differs from it/is needed
  • List of dedicated leaders who can contribute to and moderate the SIG
  • Signatures of at least 15 IMA members who endorse the idea of the group (either a consolidated signature sheet or endorsement emails sent to SIG@imanet.org).

Each application will be considered through the lens of furthering IMA’s mission, with a determination made within 60 days of proposal submission. Newly approved SIG proposals will have a dedicated page created and new SIG leaders will receive onboarding and “SIG Success” training.
